Hello John

John

I have been a volunteer for several institutions including Senior Centers. One Senior Center I met John in 2012. John was a Korean War Veteran and he was about 80 when we met. The first time we met he sang me a song about Forgotten War by whistling. It was quite a sad song and the senior center staff and I all almost cried. He was funny and he told us so many jokes. Then I found out he was on a dialysis (3) times a week. It was a painful process and it hurt him every time he did. Then after a while things were getting serious and his son moved in to his house and took care of him. He was tough and always have fun, we kept in touch on constant basis on the phone. One day, it was one Memorial Day in 2012, all offices are closed including the clinic which he was getting treatment for his kidney ailment. On that day I was working in senior center and I checked with him on phone. I said, " Hey John, How are you doing? he said, " I am doing fine, I get a break from dialysis today". And he sounded so happy and so relieved. We talked for a while about this and that and he was happy and so did I. That was the last time I talked to him alive. A week later I called him again, he was gone already. I missed you on this Memorial Day for a reason. "We are all victims in our lives John, not just you or me or someone else but all of us. See you later John"
