Smartphone carriers told to compete fairly
Japan's Communications Ministry wants to reduce smartphone fees.
It plans to require the nation's 3 biggest firms to compete fairly with budget
carriers.
The ministry will ban major firms from providing slower
data-transmission speeds to other companies.
Budget smartphone carriers use telecommunication lines that
belong to the 3 companies.
Some users claim that low-cost providers offer slower
transmission speeds.
The 3 big carriers say they are doing business in a fair manner.
The communications minister says it is important to have a level
playing field.
Communications Minister Seiko Noda said, "Carriers are
using electric waves, which are public assets. So I want them to think of the
benefit to users first when it comes to transmission speeds and smartphone
bills."
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga has been saying
mobile-phone bills could be cut by about 40 percent
