Electric Cars

Electric cars are expected to have a major impact in the auto industry given advantages in city pollution, less dependence on oil, and expected rise in gasoline prices. World governments are pledging billions to fund development of electric vehicles and their components. The U.S. has pledged US$2.4 billion in federal grants for electric cars and batteries. China has announced it will provide US$15 billion to initiate an electric car industry. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has predicted that one in 10 cars globally will run on battery power alone by 2020.

Electric cars are a variety of electric vehicle (EV); the term electric vehicle refers to any vehicle that uses electric motors for propulsion, while electric car generally refers to road-going automobiles powered by electricity. While an electric car's power source is not explicitly an on-board battery, electric cars with motors powered by other energy sources are generally referred to by a different name: an electric car powered by sunlight is a solar car, and an electric car powered by a gasoline generator is a form of hybrid car. Thus, an electric car that derives its power from an on-board battery pack is a form of battery electric vehicle (BEV). Most often, electric car is used to refer to pure battery electric vehicles.

Electric cars enjoyed popularity between the mid-19th century and early 20th century, when electricity was among the preferred methods for automobile propulsion, providing a level of comfort and ease of operation that could not be achieved by the gasoline cars of the time. Advances in internal combustion technology led to a decline in the use of electric propulsion, effectively removing it from important markets such as the United States by the 1930s. However, in recent years interest rose in electric cars, which are perceived to be more environmentally friendly and cheaper to maintain and run, despite high initial costs.

California electric car maker Tesla Motors began development in 2004 on the Tesla Roadster, which was first delivered to customers in 2008.
The Nissan LEAF , due to be launched in 2010, is expected to be the first all electric, Surprisingly media forgot about German Automakers plans like Audi , BMW. Here is German Electric Car in 1904.



All the geniuses here at General Motors kept saying lithium-ion technology is 10 years away, and Toyota agreed with us -- and boom, along comes Tesla. So I said, 'How come some tiny little California startup, run by guys who know nothing about the car business, can do this, and we can't?'

Electric cars are generally more expensive than gasoline cars. The primary reason is the high cost of car batteries.

Most of the running cost of an electric vehicle can be attributed to the maintenance and replacement of the battery pack because an electric vehicle has only around 5 moving parts in its engine, compared to a gasoline car that has hundreds of parts in its internal combustion engine. Electric cars have expensive batteries that must be replaced but otherwise incur very low maintenance costs.. Particularly in the case of current Lithium based designs.

While heating can be simply provided with an electric resistance heater, higher efficiency and integral cooling can be obtained with a reversible heat pump

Age Limits (1983)

In US it seems as though the age limits are set because of our brains, sometimes because of our bodies. For instance, you can join the Army when youre seventeen, but after youre thirty-five they dont want you anymore. On the other hand , if you want to be a President, you cant run for the office until you are thirty-five. Obviously, the Army thinks the body's shot at thirty-five, and the writers of the Constitution didnt think anyone was smart enough to be President until they were thirty-five. Youre supposed to be smart enough to be a senator when youre thirty. To be a congressman, you dont have to be very smart at all: twenty-five.

In fourteen states you can get a driver's license when you are fourteen. Marriage laws vary wildly. In Texas, Utah, Alabama and New Hampshire you can get married when youre fourteen, if your parents approve. In Utah, you have to be sixteen, if youre a boy. In Alabama the law says you dont have to have your parent's permission to get married at fourteen -  if youve already been married before.

You coundnt drive to your own wedding in any of these states, because your driving age is sixteen. In most states you can get married before you can get in to see dirty movie with your parent's permission. Seems funny! In other words, if a fourteen girl in Utah got married to a sixteen year old boy and they had a baby and then some night they wanted to go out and see an R-rated movie, theyd have to bring the baby's grandmother along.

BURJ KHALIFA_DUBAI

BURJ KHALIFA_DUBAI: The completion of the world’s tallest skyscraper (2717 feet) more than 1000 feet taller than second tallest Taipei101 building, easily more than two Empire State Buildings.

It is unrealistic to insist on passive solar cooling in a climate where summer temperatures hit 120 degree Fahrenheit and even the bus shelters are air-conditioned. Low-E antiglare glass panels were used in exterior. The sheen of the vertical stainless steel, especially in the horizontal sun of morning and evenings, makes the building sings.

The tower used over 430,000 cubic yards of concrete and 43,000 tons of steel rebar to help determine the concrete-to-rebar ratio, three-dimensional finite element analysis models were used to predict the effects of creep and shrinking.

Seven two-to-three story high mechanical floors are distributed throughout the building about every thirty (30) floors or so. It is really a thirty (30) story building stacked on top of one another. There would be too much pressure to the pipes, and ducts would get too big if try to move things too far.

Mechanical floors house various equipments, including water tanks and pumps, air handling units, and electrical substations. Rack-mounted building-maintenance units, used for window washing, are stored in garages within the structure.

Dubai has sand problems. It sticks to everything. Window washing is expected to take place every few months.

There is a tremendous amount of pressure in a building of this height, both on the water side and on the air side.

The typical system pressure for water is 300psi. The Burj has one of the highest water pressures in the world @ up to 460psi. Imagine water pipes that is 2625 feet tall, and you do not want to be standing under that.

Pressure breaks are typically added in high-rise buildings to alleviate the forces. In the Burj, Skidmore, Owens and Merrill (SOM) created some of the highest pressure breaks ever in a building, consisting mainly of heat exchangers to isolate one riser from another. The tower’s water system supplies an average of 250,000 gallons of water daily.

Cooling the water presented another challenge for SOM’s engineers in Dubai. Hot water was very hot and that of cold water also was very hot in hotels. Imagine getting hot water out of the cold faucet at the Armani Hotel in the Burj.

Since Dubai is limited fresh water and relies on the sea, the water had to travel through the very hot ground during the salt evaporation process. Instead of following that scenario, SOM took advantage of the area’s high humidity and the large amount of condensation that results, the moisture is so high that you collect condensate in the air during a cooling period; you get a significant amount of water in the 55-65 degree Fahrenheit range. This water is collected and drained in separate piping system to a holding tank. The system provides about fifteen (15) million gallons of supplemental water per year.

Burj contains fastest elevator system in the world. The longest elevator ride takes only two (2) minutes




Tanks

When any army shows the new tank, the tank is always doing its fancy stuff, flying, driving in steep slopes, riding in marshes, swimming in water, doing it in open field. I want to see the tank go into the woods. That's where the enemy is. But see, tanks dont work in the woods. The Russians always show their tanks rolling through Red Square. But wars never fought in Red Square or in open fields. Todays battle field is not usually a field at all. It's a small city, or a town with narrow streets. Its woods, or beaches, or water. Tanks dont work in places like that. Army films about tanks always have very shallow water. They dont talk about Omaha Beach on D-Day when a great many of the tanks were unloaded in twelve (12) feet of water, where their crew drowned.

Libraries and Books

    I use a computer but twenty words on paper are worth a thousand on a computer. I like books and libraries. I have several observations to make.
  • The tradition of silence in a library ought to be abandoned. Silence can be more intrusive.
  • Publishers should print books in a just a few sizes. Look at the mess of books on shelf
  • Publishers should print the title of a book on the back parallel to the shelf, not perpendicular to it in order to save people and making books more attractive
  • Exclude books of fiction from a library. A library should be used for information, not entertainment
  • Anyone caught cutting a page out of a book, magazine, newspapers in a library should be severly penalised
  • Reduce the price of the books especiallly text books for students

Robotic lunar rover -- Lunokhod

An amazing spacecraft gently settled to the lunar surface on 17 November 1970. It carried the first successful robotic lunar rover -- Lunokhod 1. For the next ten months the rover was driven by operators in the Soviet Union, with the total distance traveled exceeding 10 km. For comparison, in six years of operation the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has traveled about 12 km.

After landing, the rover drove down a ramp onto the lunar surface and tested its eight wheels. The rover was driven by solar power during the day; at night it parked and relied on thermal energy from a polonium-210 radioisotope heater to survive the cold (-150°C).

The intrepid rover sent back valuable data concerning the composition of the regolith (soil), close up views of the local topography, and important engineering measurements of the regolith.

Two years later (January 1973) Luna 21 landed in Le Monnier crater, delivering an upgraded Lunokhod 2. It sported higher resolution cameras and an improved scientific payload. Like its predecessor, it was driven by engineers on Earth during the day, and parked at night. Lunokhod 2 explored the Moon for about four months. Unfortunately, the mission was brought to an early end due to overheating, perhaps when soil got on the rover and covered key components.

The two Lunokhods showed the value of robotic explorers on the surface of another world. It would be another 24 years before the next robotic rover, Sojourner, drove on another world - this time Mars. The next lunar rover, 40 years later, is scheduled for 2013, a joint venture between India and Russia.

Recently the LROC Science Operations Center received an unexpected visitor - Ruslan Kuzmin. He was one of the scientists who had actually participated in the Lunokhod missions! We were able to show him LROC pictures of the hardware on the surface and he was gracious enough to write down some of his thoughts upon seeing his "old friends".

"Thank you very much for showing me the excellent LROC images of the Lander platform from “Luna-21”, as well as the robotic lunar rover “Lunokhod-2” in its last and eternal parking place after a 37-km, 4 month journey of research.

To see the images with Lunokhod-2 and its tracks on the lunar surface is a very special feeling for me. In the time of the Lunokhod-2 operation, I was a young planetologist who was participating in the mission, and I analyzed the images received by the rover’s TV- camers. In actual fact, this was the first successful mission in which I was involved. It was 37 years ago (in the last century!) when the Lunokhod-2 traveled for four months within the crater Le-Monier at the eastern edge of the Mare Serenitatis.

While looking at LROC images of the Lunokhod-2 rover, I felt a deep interior excitement due to the welled up memories of the earliest “pages” of my science career. It is very exciting that the Lunokhod-2, as well as many other American and Soviet Union Landers, which operated many tens of years ago, now might be imaged by LROC so clearly, and viewed by millions of people around the world. The LRO camera is without any doubt a really fantastic instrument that simultaneously brings our eyes close to the lunar surface, while reminding us of pioneering results from historical missions. 1974 Hawking said that black holes are not really black after all : they glow like a hot body and the smaller they are the more they glow. He proposed a mechanism by which black holes transform their mass into both radiation and particles that leave the hole.The result is that black holes gradually evaporate. So they do not last forever. The amount of radiation, now known as Hawking radiation, escaping from black hole is inversely proportional to the square of its mass ; that is, the smaller the black hole is, the shorter its life span.
